May 25, 2017US authorities have arrested four chinese international students who were allegedly involved in a college entrance test scam.
US Federal Prosecutors claim that Yue Wang, who is a international student at Hult International Business School, sat the TOEFL exam for three other Chinese international students – Shikun Zhang, Leyi Huang, and Xiaomeng Cheng. They then relied on the exam scores to gain admission to Northeastern University, Penn State University and Arizona State University.
Wang was paid almost US$7,000 take the test by Zhang, Huang and Cheng after they had earlier failed to achieve the minimum TOEFL entry scores set by each of the universities.
Zhang, Huang and Cheng now face charges of conspiring to defraud the United States.
William Weinreb, acting US Attorney said:
Illegal schemes to circumvent the TOEFL exam jeopardize both academic integrity and our country’s student vida program. By effectively purchasing passing scores, [the students] violated the rules and regulations of the exam, taking spots at US colleges and universities that could have gone to others.
If found guilty the students face a penalty of up to five years in jail, or a fine of up to $250,000. If convicted they will be deported after service any sentence imposed.
