Drexel University has announced that it’s expanding its unique Drexel Promise scholarship program and will offer 50% renewable scholarships for the cost of tuition to all admitted community college graduates, starting next fall.
Begun in fall 2023, the Drexel Promise initially provided students who had earned an Associate’s degree at an accredited community college in either Pennsylvania or New Jersey with a renewable scholarship for half of tuition costs.
Now, based on the initial success of the program, Drexel is going to open it up to community college student nationwide. In the first year of the program, more than 350 students applied to Drexel via the Promise program, and over 120 community college students ultimately enrolled.
“Our goal is to expand access to the Drexel education,” said Dawn Medley, EdD, Drexel’s senior vice president for Enrollment Management, in the university’s release. “Our experiential education model has proven to be one of the best ways for students to prepare to be leaders in their careers, so it’s incumbent on us provide opportunities for more students to earn a Drexel degree.”
The Drexel Promise will now be open to associate degree graduates of accredited U.S. community colleges accepted for admission to a 4-year, on-campus, bachelor’s degree program at the university. The scholarship is renewable each year, provided the student maintains a minimum 2.0 cumulative GPA. Applications for the Fall 2024 term are open through August and will be reviewed a rolling basis, according to the university.
At the time the scholarship program was introduced, Drexel was enrolling about 650 transfer students each year, but the university wanted to aim at a specific group — students in its own “backyard” who were academically qualified, but who need additional support to finish their baccalaureate degree.
The program is modeled after Drexel’s Liberty Scholars Program, which began a decade ago, and provides full scholarships to local high school graduates who may not otherwise have been able to afford college.
“We view this program as the next step in the process of inviting more students to bring their life experiences to Drexel and continue learning from the real-world experiences we provide as part of our unique curriculum,” added April Torgun, director of transfer admissions at the university. “As a result of sharing these experiences, our university continues to evolve to better prepare students for their career path after graduation.”
Founded in 1891, Drexel University is a nationally regarded private research university with a total enrollment of more than 21,000 students. down from a peak of more than 26,000 in 2014. It’s famous for its co-op (cooperative) program, which provides students the chance to combine academic study with full-time employment, a kind of “test-drive” of their careers. Most majors at Drexel require a co-op experience.
Low rates of degree completion have been a long-standing issue for community college students. Data from the National Center for Education Statistics show that only 13% of community college students graduate in two years. After three years, approximately 22% graduate, and within four years, the rate reaches 28%.
The Drexel Promise attempts to address that problem by making eligibility for the tuition scholarships contingent on students having finished their Associate’s degrees.
Although the scholarships will cover half of students’ tuition (Drexel’s full time, sticker price tuition is about $20,000 per quarter, or $60,000 total, for next year), they can be combined with other forms of federal and state financial assistance like Pell Grants to further reduce costs.
